Australia's "winningest" trainers last week - SPOTLIGHT on Charlotte Littlefield

Here is the list of trainers who trained at least a double at any of the Tab meetings last week, along with the jockeys for who rode the winners. This table is colour coded to highlight the outperformers and it is worth noting these stables and the combinations.

A key factor to be considered in selection-making is the stable, and the trainer-jockey combination. The Wizard weekly "winningest" trainer report is a valuable guide as to which stable/trainer and jockey-trainer combination is currently in form.

To add to this weekly insight, we SPOTLIGHT a particular stable and post an in-depth coverage of its record with different riders, over a period of two years.

Here is the SNAPHOT PROFILE on Charlotte Littlefield (via ChatGPT and other sources), which makes for some interesting reading.

Background and racing journey

Charlotte Littlefield grew up in Somerset, England, where her mother ran a riding school, and where she was "practically born in the saddle", progressing through pony club into multiple equestrian disciplines. She made the British Eventing Team, giving her a strong grounding in horsemanship, athletic preparation and discipline long before she turned to racing. goracing.co

She moved to Australia in 2005, initially taking on pretraining work with racehorses while completing her university studies - culminating in a Batchelor of Business degree - which is how she first became seriously involved in the racing industry. Her growing passion for thoroughbreds led her to Cranbourne, where she rode trackwork for trainers Pat Trotter and Ken Keys. goodwood+2

Stable location and facilities

Charlotte is the head trainer of Hayfields Racing, established with her husband Julian Hay, which is based on the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria. The operation has its primary training base at Pakenham. The smaller scale of the stable has allowed Charlotte to keep a handson role, including riding some of the horses herself in their work. hayfieldsracing+1

Successful jockey partnerships

Charlotte regularly uses experienced riders such as Brad Rawiller, Ben Allen, Zac Spain, Daniel Stackhouse, and Craig Williams on her horses. Last Saturday the in-form Jett Stanley landed a double for the stable at Flemington. These combinations show a preference for strong, senior jockeys.

Key winners and major results

Charlotte prepared her first winner, Bergerac Rose, in 2015, only her second starter after taking out her trainers licence. Since then, Hayfields Racing has grown in both size and in the quality of the horses in the stable. The stable achieved its first stakes success with Regal Vow, a modestly priced acquisition that won a Listed race at Caulfield. By 2025 the stable had achieved two Group 3 victories, a second placing in the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate, and a Country Cup win, along with a record number of winners for the yard that season. youtube thoroughbredracing+3 racingahead+3

Training philosophy and horse placement

Profiles of Charlotte and behindthescenes coverage of Hayfields Racing emphasise her handson approach. She remains closely involved in the management of the horses, drawing on her eventing background to focus on fitness, balance, and mental wellbeing rather than just track gallops. Her English background influences her training style, with horses regularly working up hills, schooling over crosscountry jumps, or training in the dressage arena to build strength, balance, and versatility. Her rise has been linked to the careful placement of horses in suitable grade and distance events, often targeting provincial and country races where conditions match each horse's strengths and development stage. The stable's association with progressive owners and syndicators also allows her to buy horses with profiles that fit her patient, developmental style of training. proventhoroughbreds.com+4

Other roles in racing

Beyond training, Charlotte is an active media presence in Australian racing, working as a racing presenter and interviewer. She is a familiar oncourse face for Channel 7 and Racing.com, where she interviews winning jockeys and connections and contributes to coverage of Victorian racing. media.goodwood

Internationally, she has also been announced as a rider for the 2026 Markel Magnolia Cup at Goodwood. This blend of training, media work and international riding appearances has made Charlotte one of the more recognisable younger figures in the Australian racing landscape. racingahead+2

Wizard Freebie - Wizard Watch report

The aim of the Wizard Watch report is to highlight on race-morning which horses have been the most significant firmers overnight and earlier on race-morning. This Wizard freebie is an extract of this report featuring some of the venues being covered today. The full report is available with the other Wizard "market sensitive" reports at 10:30am each day.

Wizard monitors race morning market trends over the first 3 hours of race day betting to determine which horses are anticipated to run above earlier pre-post expectations and which horses have had their higher probabilities confirmed.

Given the significance of this early/informed market action, the odds about the Wizard Watch Morning Movers naturally skew towards the shorter odds, but this is compensated by the strike rate. Double figure odds about successful Market Movers are rare, but each-way odds winners are backable.
