Today, the jockey in each of the five mainland states who is prominent in the 2025-2026 state's provincial premiership, with the stats covering the past two years.

The Jockey/Trainer combinations that are included are based on the following criteria: Included if there are at least 2 wins when the jockey is riding a stable's Wizard top-rater, or at least 3 wins when riding a stable's race favourite, or at least 4 winners in the $2.00 to $5.90 odds range. Also included are the key overall percentage stats for the jockey when riding a Wizard WRat 100 or the race favourite for any stable during this period. The results cover all three locations - metropolitan, provincial, and country racing.

Matrix day-by-day results for Sunday and Monday racing

The tables show the results for the past eight weeks for the day on which racing occurred. So, today being Sunday, this Matrix DOW (Day of Week) report covers the past eight Sunday and Monday results. The day-after results are included so that they are available on race-eve, rather than only on race morning.

"Winningest" jockeys, Winning Jockeys back-on, SNAPSHOT Ashley Morgan

Here is the list of jockeys who rode at least a double at any of the Tab meetings last week, along with the trainers for whom they rode the winners. This table is colour coded to highlight the outperformers and it is definitely worth noting these riders and combinations.

It is also worth noting when a jockey who has previously won on a horse is replacing a rider who has not done so. Whilst history shows that this is not a prime indicator of likely success, it is significant in some cases.

The list below shows the winning horses last week that raced with a (previous) winning jockey replacing a rider who had not previously been successful on the horse.

Ashley (Ash) Morgan is a Welsh-born jockey who has been enjoying particular success on the New South Wales provincial and country circuit since arriving in Australia in 2018. Early Life and UK Career

Born near Cardiff, Wales, Ashley grew up riding hunters and point-to-point horses owned by his grandfather. By 13-14, he rode trackwork for local trainers, initially eyeing jumps racing but switching to flats after advice from trainer Phillip Hobbs. [johntapp]

At 16, he apprenticed with Mark Tompkins at Newmarket. He then transferred to Ed Dunlop, amassing 70 wins including Royal Ascot and Newmarket rides, and a Paris victory. In 2018, an email to a dozen Aussie trainers yielded a break from Brett Cavanough at Scone, who hired him for trackwork. He claimed his first local win at Gilgandra on Hidden Chief. A treble at Muswellbrook in January 2019 (Artefiori, Emanuela for Paul Messara; Drusilla) ignited his career. He rode 45 winners in his first full Australian season (2018-19). A key milestone came in the 2021-22 season when he won the NSW Jockeys Premiership. In the 2024-25 season he had 110 wins in the NSW Jockeys Premiership at a 14.3% strike rate.  [johntapp]

Australia's "winningest" trainers last week - SPOTLIGHT and SNAPSHOT on Tony & Calvin McEvoy

Here is the list of trainers who trained at least a double at any of the Tab meetings last week, along with the jockeys for who rode the winners. This table is colour coded to highlight the outperformers and it is worth noting these stables and the combinations.

A key factor to be considered in selection-making is the stable, and the trainer-jockey combination. The Wizard weekly "winningest" trainer report is a valuable guide as to which stable/trainer and jockey-trainer combination is currently in form.

Tony and Calvin McEvoy, one of Australian racings most successful father-son training teams, has roots that run deep through South Australian and latterly, Victorian racing. Tonys story began in Streaky Bay, on South Australias west coast, in a family where horses were always part of life; his father and grandfather owned horses, his brother Phillip rode, and Tony himself started as a jockey before moving into training. Calvin brought fresh energy and interstate experience to the business, working under David Hayes and David Simcock in the UK before joining the stable and becoming Tonys partner in 2019.

Racing background

Tony McEvoy learned his craft at the famous Lindsay Park operation under C.S. Hayes at Angaston, starting as a foreman and rising to assistant trainer before becoming head trainer. He also had a riding career, winning 100 races as a jockey before weight restrictions forced him out of the saddle. Another family connection to racing is through his brother Phillips son, Kerrin McEvoy.

Stable locations

For many years the McEvoys were based at Kildalton Park in Angaston in the Barossa Valley, the former Lindsay Park property, and that site carried a major emotional and historical connection for Tony. The business later expanded into Ballarat, where they moved their training base in 2022, while also maintaining a Flemington presence and at times operating across South Australia, Victoria, Sydney, and other racing centres. That footprint shows a stable built to target the right race rather than stay fixed to one location.

Most successful riders

The stable has used a mix of top jockeys, but several names stand out. Luke Currie rode Hey Doc to the stables first Group 1 win in partnership, while Jamie Kah was a major figure in South Australian racing during the period when the McEvoys were competing there. The stable also works closely with riders who suit individual horses, which is part of its race placement approach. Prominent currently are Harry Coffey, John Allen, Linda Meech, Beau Mertens, and occasionally Blake Shinn.

Biggest wins

Tonys breakthrough as a trainer came with Larrocha in the 2003 South Australian Oaks, a victory that echoed his own success in the same race as a jockey 26 years earlier. Among his best-known horses are Fields Of Omagh, who delivered a career-defining Cox Plate win in 2003, and Sunlight, one of Australias outstanding sprinters with Group 1 wins in the Coolmore Stud Stakes, Newmarket Handicap, and William Reid Stakes. In partnership with Calvin, major highlights include Hey Docs Winterbottom Stakes, and more recently the father-son team made history with Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup success with Half Yours in 2025.

Preparation and placement

They emphasise reading each horses profile, working with owners, and setting horses for the right target race, whether that is a country maiden, a provincial race, or a Group 1 opportunity. Jockey-Trainer statistics - five states - jockeys in provincial premiership

Today, jockeys in each of the five mainland states who are currently prominent in their state 2025-2026 provincial premiership, with the stats covering the past two years. Note, however, that these stats cover the rider's results in all races, irrespective of location.

The Jockey/Trainer combinations that are included are based on the following criteria: The Jockey/Trainer combination is listed when a jockey's record shows at least 2 wins when riding the Wizard top-rater, or at least 3 wins when riding the race favourite, or 4 wins if the runner is in the $2.00 to $5.90 odds range, for that stable. Also included are the overall percentage stats for the jockey when riding a Wizard top rater or race favourite, for any stable.

Matrix day-by-day results for Friday and Saturday racing

The tables show the results for the past eight weeks for the day on which racing occurred. So, today being Friday, this Matrix DOW (Day of Week) report covers the past eight Friday and Saturday results. The day-after results are included so that they are available on race-eve, rather than only on race morning.

Wizard Freebie - Wizard What-IF Report and Selective Betting Results

The Wizard What-IF report has more than one application. It can help to identify the horse/s best suited in a race and possessing the more reliable form. Also, it can help to differentiate between races that represent a positive betting opportunity from those whose fields are below par in terms of the revealed form. The What-IF report is available with the first upload of Wizard's race files and is then updated on race morning

The What-IF report profiles the six top rated Wizard WRat runners in each race. The data in the report shows the record of each horse when it started at 10/1 or less, and/or won at longer odds, in a race in the distance range.

In terms of horse suitability, What-IF focuses on fitness and form. It does this through indicators that are relevant to these form factors. With respect to reliability, included in the FITNESS FORM category are each runner's Wizard Filter and Negatives scores. As these scores are determined by the record of the horse when running under similar conditions, they are a particularly relevant indicator of how well, and how consistently, it has performed over time. The higher the number, the better the score, with a Filter score of +7 being a genuinely positive assessment in terms of runner reliability.

The lower section of the What-IF report addresses the issue of uncertainty, by considering a range of "unknown" factors, and how versatile the runner is, and how adaptable it is likely to be under different race conditions.

For selective bettors a suggested approach is to concentrate on those races where one of the top two WRat runners has a Filter score of +7 or more and the other has a score of zero or better (not negative). This approach means the focus is on only those races where the top two rated runners are assessed as suitably placed and reliable. This approach aims to reduce the degree of risk and uncertainty when choosing races as possible wagering opportunities and deciding on final selections.
