It is also worth noting when a jockey who has previously won on a horse is replacing a rider who has not done so. Whilst history shows that this is not a prime indicator of likely success, it is significant in some cases.

Jockey-Trainer provincial statistics - five states - Spotlight on Ashley Butler 

Today, jockeys in each of the five mainland states who are currently prominent in their state 2025-2026 provincial premiership, with the stats covering the past two years. Note, however, that these stats cover the rider's results in all races, irrespective of location.

The Jockey/Trainer combinations that are included are based on the following criteria: The Jockey/Trainer combination is listed when a jockey's record shows at least 2 wins when riding the Wizard top-rater, or at least 3 wins when riding the race favourite, or 4 wins if the runner is in the $2.00 to $5.90 odds range, for that stable. Also included are the overall percentage stats for the jockey when riding a Wizard top rater or race favourite, for any stable.

To add to this weekly insight, here is a Spotlight Profile of Ashley Butler (via ChatGPT, and other sources) which makes for some interesting reading.

Ashley Butler is a 33-year-old Queensland jockey who has built an career despite being unable to ride below 58kg. Throughout his career, he has accumulated over 800 wins, and his current 2025-26 season strike rate is 20.5%. Early Days

Ashley hails from Moranbah in Central Queensland and rode his first winner on his debut day at Keppel Park, Yeppoon, on November 1, 2008. He completed his apprenticeship under trainer John Meagher before relocating to Mackay and eventually settling in Rockhampton. Racing Queensland

Racing Locations

Ashley's career has been primarily based in Central and South-East Queensland, with his main racing hubs shifting over time. For approximately eight years, he predominantly rode at Rockhampton and Mackay, while also making regular appearances at Cairns and Townsville. He rode 181 winners at Rocky's Callaghan Park alone during his Central Queensland stint. In early 2026, following flooding in Central Queensland, he relocated back to Brisbane and secured a full-time position riding trackwork for Eagle Farm trainer Kelly Schweida. Since returning to South-East Queensland, he has ridden at Toowoomba and tracks across the Darling Downs region.

Trainer Partnerships

Statistics from Racing Queensland show that Ashley has ridden more winners for trainer Jared Wehlow than for any other stable. Over the last two years Ashley has been most successful with trainers such as Nick Walsh, Clinton Taylor, and Georgina Bourke. Now also riding regularly in the South-East he has developed solid working relationships with several stables, including those of Mark Currie and Billy Healy.

Major Race Victories

His most significant wins have come in The Archer, Rockhampton's premier feature race. He won the inaugural running in 2022 aboard Emerald Kingdom for trainer Robert Heathcote. He then captured The Archer for a second time in its 2024 edition aboard the locally trained Namazu. Other feature race victories include the Rockhampton Newmarket for trainer Olivia Cairns and the Battle Of The Bush aboard Tiger Legend for John Manzelmann in 2024.

Wizard Freebie - Wizard What-IF Report

The Wizard What-IF report has more than one application. It can help to identify the horse/s best suited in a race and possessing the more reliable form. Also, it can help to differentiate between races that represent a positive betting opportunity from those whose fields are below par in terms of the revealed form. The What-IF report is available with the first upload of Wizard's race files and is then updated on race morning

The What-IF report profiles the six top rated Wizard WRat runners in each race. The data in the report shows the record of each horse when it started at 10/1 or less, and/or won at longer odds, in a race in the distance range.

In terms of horse suitability, What-IF focuses on fitness and form. It does this through indicators that are relevant to these form factors. With respect to reliability, included in the FITNESS FORM category are each runner's Wizard Filter and Negatives scores. As these scores are determined by the record of the horse when running under similar conditions, they are a particularly relevant indicator of how well, and how consistently, it has performed over time. The higher the number, the better the score, with a Filter score of +7 being a genuinely positive assessment in terms of runner reliability.

The lower section of the What-IF report addresses the issue of uncertainty, by considering a range of "unknown" factors, and how versatile the runner is, and how adaptable it is likely to be under different race conditions.

For selective bettors a suggested approach is to concentrate on those races where one of the top two WRat runners has a Filter score of +7 or more and the other has a score of zero or better (not negative). This approach means the focus is on only those races where the top two rated runners are assessed as suitably placed and reliable. This approach aims to reduce the degree of risk and uncertainty when choosing races as possible wagering opportunities and deciding on final selections.
