To gain a deeper understanding of the significance of a horses win strike rate when it enters the barrier, Wizard analysed five years of racing

Most experienced form analysts appreciate that it is not possible to predict likely win probability purely from the consistency statistics in a formguide, but this is not something the average punter instinctively appreciates.

The survey concentrated on horses 4yo to 6yo, racing both on metropolitan tracks as well as provincial and country tracks. No maiden races were included.

The clear message delivered by this analysis is that the winning percentage of a horse going into a race is not, in itself, indicative of the horses chance of success.

Horses with a 50%+ strike rate do not win 50% of the time; the strike race for this subset is around 20%.

This 50%+ group of horses do outperform, however. For example, the 2,581 male runners in this category on metropolitan tracks won 532 races of the 6,604 races run. Their impact value was 2.0.

The other subsets follow the same pattern. Whilst an individual runner can maintain (and even improve) its win strike rate, the group as a whole will not.

It comes back again to the evaluation of the individual runner on multiple factors, including its form history and the suitability of the race conditions that will apply.

In summary, this analysis confirms that it is not the basic win-place-starts statistics that are the best guide to a horses likely success.

Australia's "winningest" jockeys last week and Winning Jockeys back-on

Here is the list of jockeys who rode at least a double at any of the Tab meetings last week, along with the trainers for whom they rode the winners. This table is colour coded to highlight the outperformers and it is definitely worth noting these riders and combinations.

It is also worth noting when a jockey who has previously won on a horse is replacing a rider who has not done so. Whilst history shows that this is not a prime indicator of likely success, it is significant in some cases.

The list below shows the winning horses last week that raced with a (previous) winning jockey replacing a rider who had not previously been successful on the horse.

It would be fair to say that the vast majority of horse race bettors think about the form of a horse before deciding on a wager.

What constitutes form?

For some, it is just the finish positions that appear alongside the horses name in the formguide. Others take a broader view and seek out information associated with those form figures.

For the purposes of this chapter certain key components of a horses race history are considered relevant to meaningful form analysis.

The key form-related factors to be examined are:

-        finish position at last start

-        beaten margin at last start

-        winning margin at last start

-        days since last win

-        runs from a spell

-        days since last run

-        distance change from last start

-        Field Strength (class) change from last start

 Also:

-        An analysis of the results when two factors are combined: For example, finish position last start and its impact on performance over different distance ranges.

Form - The statistics

An appreciation of how the factors listed above have impacted overall on horse performance is a key to better analysing any individual runner.

Whilst every horse must be assessed individually, it is helpful to have an overall view of how certain factors have played out historically. There are patterns and trends.

The form-factor statistics in this chapter cover:

              -        Nation-wide stats for Metro, Provincial, and Country racing

              -        The main body stats (M,P,C) cover four full seasons of racing

              -        The stats are for horses that started at 10/1 or shorter

Two-Horse Betting - Staking Options - Dutch Betting

  Losing sequences are to be expected. What is needed is a wagering strategy that accommodates these sequences without endangering the betting bank during a down cycle.

  The first step in this process is to decide on a comfortable bet size and the capital requirements needed to safely fund the wagering, given the assumptions made about strike rates and losing sequences.

  The next step is to decide on a staking strategy that embodies consistency, safety, and sustainability.

  In the context of pursuing a professional approach to wagering, the traditional recreational-bettor option for backing the two (or possibly more) runners in a race with level stakes is not included in the list of alternatives.

  There are four staking options that are relevant:

-        Dutch Betting

-        Proportional Staking

-        Staking the assessed odds

-        Saver staking

  In the following examples the settings are:

               -        Bank $3000

              -        Bet size per race $50 (maximum)

              -        Assumed longest losing run 12 races

             -        Operative drawdown 20%

             -        Assessed probability of horse A is 28% (5/2 = $3.50)

             -        Assessed probability of horse B is 17% (5/1 = $6.00)

             -        Available odds for horse A = 2/1 ($3.00 = 33%)

             -        Available odds for horse B = 8/1 ($9.00 = 11%)

Dutch Betting

  The primary objective with this staking strategy is to make the same profit on the race irrespective of which of the two runners is the winner.

  The normal procedure with this option is to stake according to the available odds, which might not be the same as the assessed odds.

Targeted gross return or the take out is $100

Horse A stake = $100 divided by odds available $3.00 = $33.50

Horse B stake = $100 divided by odds available $9.00 = $11.00

If horse A wins = $33.50 @ $3.00 = $100.50

If horse B wins = $11.00 @ $9.00 = $99.00

Result Horse A winning = $100.50 - ($33.50 + $11.00) = $56.00 profit

Result Horse B winning = $99.00 - ($11.00 + $33.50) = $54.50 profit

Matrix day-by-day results for Saturday and Sunday racing

The tables show the results for the past eight weeks for the day on which racing occurred. So, today being Saturday, this Matrix DOW (Day of Week) report covers the past eight Saturday and Sunday results. The day-after results are included so that they are available on race-eve, rather than only on race morning.

(The daily Matrix report aims to assist subscribers contain the number of bets to manageable proportions and improve the strike rate. The report is posted to our website between 10:30am and 10:45am each day with an update at 12 noon.)

Wizard Ratings, Raceday, Matrix, and Selectives results

We publish these full results daily so that subscribers can see the results of the Wizard's ratings options, and Report-content, and thereby formulate a selecting and betting strategy that suits them individually. The Wizard ratings should not be seen as "tips", rather as objective assessments that can be used to inform one's own judgement as to the relative chances of the runners in a race.

The full day-by-day results for Wizard (Wrat) top 4 rated runners, the Raceday Qualifier, and the Matrix (MaxR) 100 pointer, the MaxR top-two, the Matrix W1+MaxR100 qualifier, and the Matrix W1+*EO+MaxR100 qualifier. Also included are the overall results for last week and the last four weeks. The 2023-2024 column shows the WRat results for the full 2023-2024 racing season. This results summary is colour coded so that it is easier for readers to track the relative performance of the Top Rated (blue) and Top-Two Rated (green) ratings options on a daily, and longer term, basis. The best overall qualifier (yellow) is also highlighted.

The following table shows this week's results of alternative options with respect to possible Matrix Selectives combinations, as well as weekly summaries. These combinations are accessible via the Wizard MATRIX report which is posted to our website between 10:30am and 10:45am each day.

(Key: The first of the two columns for each Selective combination shows number of qualifying races and the second column shows the strike rate. Headings: RWM is Raceday,Watch,Magic,  RWM 2/3 means two or three qualifying, Rday is Raceday report qualifier , Magic is Magic report qualifier, R/M is Raceday and Magic, WR1 is Wrat 100, MR1 is MaxR 100.)

The following table shows where the winner of each race run yesterday was rated by WRat, WMod, WHcp, and WExpk and was the qualifier in the Wizard Raceday Report. (Note: The Wrat [W] winner results report on both the top rated and top-two rated winners.) The Raceday Report winners under the Top Rated column are from those races where there was only one Raceday qualifier, and under the Top 2 Rated on the rare occasions where there were two qualifiers in a race.
