Jockey-Trainer metro stats - five states - Spotlight on Jye McNeil

Today, jockeys in each of the five mainland states who are prominent in their respective 2025-2026 metropolitan premierships, with the following stats covering the past two years.

The Jockey/Trainer combinations that are included here are based on the following criteria: The Jockey/Trainer combination is listed when a jockey's record shows at least 2 wins when riding the Wizard top-rater, or at least 3 wins when riding the race favourite, or 4 wins if the runner is in the $2.00 to $5.90 odds range, for that stable. Also included are the overall percentage stats for the jockey when riding a Wizard top rater or race favourite, for any stable. Note, that these stats cover the rider's results in all races, irrespective of location.

To add to this weekly insight, here is a Spotlight Profile of Jye McNeil (via ChatGPT, and other sources) which makes for some interesting reading.

Jye McNeil is a Victorian-based jockey best known for his enterprising frontrunning ride to win the 2020 Melbourne Cup on Twilight Payment. wikipedia+1

Early life and family background

Jye was born in 1994 and grew up in the small Murray River town of Koondrook in northern Victoria. Racing is a family affair: his father Daryl is a farmer and hobby horse trainer, and his brother Logan has also become a jockey. Jye is married to fellow jockey Jessica Payne. wikiwand+2

Entry into racing and apprenticeship

Jye began his race riding career in 2011, starting out in country Victoria. His first race ride came in November 2011 at Swan Hill, and he notched his first winner the following month on De Mars at Kerang.  He commenced his apprenticeship with Mansfield trainer Gerald Egan, who has also guided the early careers of top jockeys such as Luke Nolen. facebook+1 skyracingworld+1

Main riding bases and circuits

Jye is based in Victoria and does the bulk of his riding on the Melbourne metropolitan circuit and he also rides frequently at Victorian provincial meetings. Beyond Australia, he has taken selective shortterm opportunities overseas, most notably a sixweek stint in Hong Kong in late 2022, where he rode at Sha Tin and Happy Valley. scmp+1

Key trainers and riding relationships

From his early days Jye's career was shaped by Gerald Egan, who not only supervised his apprenticeship but also helped him build contacts in the broader Victorian training ranks. As he progressed, he secured opportunities from leading stables, riding highclass horses such as Kings Will Dream, Twilight Payment, Homesman and Im Thunderstruck in major races.  His willingness to travel to country and provincial meetings has also kept him in demand with emerging trainers looking to utilise a Group 1proven jockey on progressive horses. Jye has partnered with many leading Australian trainers including Anthony and Sam Freedman, Ciaron Maher, Robbie Griffiths, and more recently with Team Hawkes and Chris Waller. everyrace+2

Major wins and career highlights

Jye's first Group 1 success came aboard Kings Will Dream in the 2019 Turnbull Stakes at Flemington. However, the defining moment of his career so far was the 2020 Melbourne Cup, where he produced a daring alltheway ride on Irish stayer Twilight Payment at his first Cup ride. Subsequent Group 1 wins have included the 2021 Australian Cup on Homesman and the 2021 Toorak Handicap on Im Thunderstruck. By mid2025 McNeil had ridden around 1,100 winners, which included a fivewin haul at a single Caulfield meeting. wikipedia+1 youtube wikipedia+2
