Jockey-Trainer metro stats - five states - Spotlight on Beau Mertens

Today, jockeys in each of the five mainland states who are prominent in their respective 2025-2026 metropolitan premierships, with the following stats covering the past two years.

The Jockey/Trainer combinations that are included here are based on the following criteria: The Jockey/Trainer combination is listed when a jockey's record shows at least 2 wins when riding the Wizard top-rater, or at least 3 wins when riding the race favourite, or 4 wins if the runner is in the $2.00 to $5.90 odds range, for that stable. Also included are the overall percentage stats for the jockey when riding a Wizard top rater or race favourite, for any stable. Note, that these stats cover the rider's results in all races, irrespective of location.

To add to this weekly insight, here is a Spotlight Profile of Beau Mertens (via ChatGPT, and other sources) which makes for some interesting reading.

Beau Mertens is a Victorian-based jockey who has built on a strong racing family legacy to become a Group 1 winner and a regular rider for some of Australias top trainers. domain.com+2

Background and family in racing

Beau was born into racing, as the son of Group 1-winning jockey Peter Mertens. Growing up on the Mornington Peninsula, he spent much of his childhood at the races with his father and decided around age 11 or 12 that he wanted to become a jockey himself. His father, Peter, rode more than 2100 winners, including seven at Group 1 level, with notable successes for trainers such as Bart Cummings. racing+2 njt.org+2

Early career and main riding bases

Beau began race riding in 2014 and he quickly progressed through the Victorian apprentice ranks. He completed his apprenticeship with trainer Michael Kent at Cranbourne. Within three years he was challenging senior riders for the Victorian jockeys' premiership, ultimately finishing second after a breakout 2016/17 season in which he was crowned champion Victorian apprentice. He primarily rides in Victoria but has also represented Australia overseas in an apprentice series in France and ridden on short stints in Singapore. racing+2

Key trainers and riding relationships

Across his career Beau has forged links with several major stables. Early on, he was apprenticed to and strongly associated with Michael Kent. In more recent seasons he has developed a particularly successful partnership with the training team of Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr, regularly riding winners for them and sharing feature-race success. He is also riding for Chris Waller, collecting winners and a key spring carnival placing for the stable. Also noteworthy is his success with Anthony and Sam Freedman. Alongside these headline relationships, he rides for a broad spread of Victorian trainers, including Gavin Bedggood and Greg Eurell, which has helped him accumulate more than 800 career wins and maintain a strong metropolitan and provincial presence. latrobevalleyexpress.com+2 racing+2

Major wins and career highlights

Beau's breakthrough season in 2016/17 included his first Group race victories, notably Group 2 wins aboard Snitty Kitty in the Caulfield Sprint and Showtime in the Stutt Stakes, as well as another Group success that year. Over time he has added to that blacktype record and progressed to Group 1 level, winning on Attrition in the 2023 Group 1 Toorak Handicap at 25/1 for Mitchell Freedman. Also, in 2023 he captured the Moe Cup on Fengarada, a meaningful win that coincided with tributes to his late father, and he has also claimed the Listed Cranbourne Cup on Sabaj for the Price and Kent Jnr stable. His consistent performances have underlined his status as an inform and versatile rider in Victoria. facebook+3 racing+2
