Jockey & Trainer combinations (Jean Van Overmeire)

South African born Jean Van Overmeire's journey to Australia is most interesting. After his family migrated to the UK he became apprenticed to Roger Varian who took over the Michael Jarvis stable after Michael died in 2011. One winner in 14 rides gave him pause for thought and he decided to pursue a future career as a foreman or assistant trainer. He then secured a stable job riding work for Mike de Kock in Dubai. There he met Jack Bruce, who was to become Warwick Farm trainer Bjorn Bakers racing manager. Jack encouraged him to come to Australia. Jean landed in Sydney in 2016 but visa issues meant he couldnt ride in races for almost a year.

His first Australian winner came at the Sapphire Coast on August 7 in 2016. His maiden city win came in June 2017 on the Bjorn Baker-trained Samadoubt. In the following years he served his apprenticeship with leading trainers Bjorn Baker and Anthony Cummings. No longer an apprentice, Jean is based in Sydney and is a regular winner on the surrounding provincial and country tracks, as well as in the city itself.

Though yet to taste Group 1 success, Jean rode a winner at Group 2 level when Glistening won the Reisling Stakes at Randwick in March 2021. There is no doubting his ability, and this is confirmed by the fact that he is currently in 7th place in the 2023-2024 NSW Jockey Premiership on 94 wins, with a strike rate of 14%.

This table examines the jockey-trainer combinations under three conditions:

  • When the horse is the Wrat 100 pointer and started at odds between $2.00 and $5.90
  • When the horse runs as the race favourite at odds between $2.00 and $5.90
  • When the horse starts at odds between $2.00 and $5.90

Trainer & Jockey combinations (Brett Cavanough)

Brett Cavanough is based primarily in Scone. He began his training career in 1999, starting in Tocumwal. A year later he moved his operations to Albury. It was here that he began to make a name for himself in the Southern Districts, where he has won thirteen SDRA (Southern Districts Racing Association) titles. He has also won the NSW Country Trainers' Premiership five times.

Early influencers would have been his grandfather Frank for whom he rode trackwork, and Queensland trainers Jim McCormack and Barry Baldwin. He also benefited greatly by working for, and learning from, the legendary T.J. Smith and Neville Begg. And the family connection has continued as his son Jack oversees pre-training and breaking in at Cavanough Racing.

In January of this year it was reported that Brett had just under 100 horses in work, including 70 at his Scone base and anywhere from 20 to 30 at his Ballina satellite stable.

Among Brett's notable wins have been Helideck in the 2008 Prime Ministers Cup (Group 2) at the Gold Coast, and Niblick in his hometown Commercial Club Albury Cup (Listed).

This table examines the trainer-jockey combinations under three conditions:
