Jockey & Trainer combinations and profile (Mark Zahra)
Mark Zahra started his racing career in Western Australia, beginning his apprenticeship with Dean White. He rode his first winner at Geraldton in March 1999. At the age of 19, with his opportunities seemingly limited in WA, Mark decided to relocate to Victoria, and was encouraged to do so by several senior riders in Perth.
Initially Mark linked up with trainer Brian Cox who, with 50 horses in work, gave him the opportunity to ride more often and ride more winners. Later came the association with Tony McEvoy at Lindsay Park, and this higher profile connection led to better opportunities, and facilitated the transition to that of recognized metropolitan rider. Also, there was a stint riding for Sheikh Mohammed's Darley operation. He has ridden with success overseas in Hong Kong, Japan, Macau, New Zealand, as well as Singapore.
Mark's first Group 1 win was on the Jim Conlon trained Above Deck in the 2006 Doomben Cup. Since then, he has won a swag of Australia's most prestigious races: including the Melbourne Cup twice, once with Gold Trip in 2022 and again with Without A Fight in 2023, the Caulfield Cup in 2020 with Verry Elleegant and in 2023 with Without A Fight. His latest Group 1 success came in the Australasian Oaks at Morphettville in April this year when riding Vibrant Sun for Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr.
Currently Mark sits 6th in the Victorian Metropolitan Jockey Premiership on 38 wins, with a strike rate of 14.9%. He continues to ride very competitively and is a good "money rider" cool, calm and determined.

Included in the table are only those stables for which the jockey has registered at least one win in the $2.00 - $5.90 odds range during the period covered which is from 1 August 2022, so last season and the current season.
Warren - Wiz-Ed
