Trainer & Jockey combinations and profile (Tom Dabernig)

Tom Dabernig is based in Warrnambool. He is the grandson of legendary trainer Colin Hayes and nephew of David Hayes. His career began at Lindsay Park in 1993 where he gained invaluable experience. In 2004 he obtained his trainers licence. In August 2014, Tom entered into a training partnership with David Hayes under the Lindsay Park Racing banner. This partnership was expanded in 2016 when David's son Ben Hayes joined them.

In July 2020, following David Hayes' relocation to train in Hong Kong, Tom and Ben formed a new partnership. However, at the end of the 2021 season, Tom decided to establish his own stable in Warrnambool.

Tom's decision to start his own stable in Warrnambool was motivated partly by the desire to create a potential pathway for his own children in the racing industry. (Currently his eldest son Hugo is riding trackwork for the stable.) With respect to the location of the stable, one of the reasons for choosing Warrnambool is that it offered access to beach training facilities.

The Warrnambool stable is a 48-box complex and its location offers access to both South Australian and Victorian tracks, including the metropolitan tracks on which Tom's stable has been successful, notably in the Melbourne Cup Carnival Country Final on Oaks Day at Flemington last year, and with Flying Mascot winning three times at Group 3 level, in the Tesio Stakes, Mannerism Stakes, and Matron Stakes. Further Group success will surely follow as Tom knows what is required to win at the highest level, having been a co-trainer of 19 Group 1 winners.

Tom is currently 13th in the 2023-2024 Victoria Trainer Premiership, with a strike rate of 15%. His results show that he is a very good conditioner of his horses and does place them to advantage, as can be seen from the stats below.

The following table examines trainer-jockey combinations under three conditions:

  • When the horse is the Wrat 100 pointer and started at odds between $2.00 and $5.90
  • When the horse runs as the race favourite at odds between $2.00 and $5.90
  • When the horse starts at odds between $2.00 and $5.90

The Wizard Ratings Results report includes the results of the top-two rated Wrat runners. This information should provide a better guide to those subscribers who are interested in backing two runners in a race (where odds are acceptable) or anchor two runners for multiples etc. (Note: Over the long term the top-two Wrat runners have won around 43% to 46%, and the top rated runner 25% to 27%, of races on a seasonal basis)
