Trainer & Jockey combinations and profile (John Manzelmann)
John Manzelmann is based in Mackay, Queensland. He has a remarkable personal story, in that he was diagnosed with life-threatening cancer and given just three months to live 15 years ago. Amazingly John not only survived this health crisis and the long process of recovery, he subsequently embarked on a career as trainer of thoroughbred racehorses and is now established as a leading trainer of winners in his home state.
Prior to training thoroughbreds, John had been a leading harness racing trainer and driver in Mackay but needed a new job when trotting tracks in central and North Queensland were closed. He decided to remain in Mackay and build his own stables; started with 8, then added 4 more, then increased the establishment to 20, and now has more than 40 boxes housing his team.
John's training philosophy can be partly summed up "have saddle will travel. He will take a horse wherever he thinks it can win a race, no matter how far-flung the location. He says, Id prefer them to win a lower-grade race rather than them run fourth or fifth at a better meeting. John is great supporter of the "Battler of the Bush" series concept, and his horses had twice run second in the Brisbane final, until finally Tiger Legend prevailed at Eagle Farm in June last year. Currently John sits 3rd in the Queensland Trainer Premiership with 79 wins, and a strike rate of 9.1%.
(John's son, Lachie, has very recently transitioned from trotting to training thoroughbreds. From only a handful of starters in and around Brisbane he has already trained winners; and like his father they have been winners at good odds.)

This information should provide a better guide to those subscribers who are interested in backing two runners in a race (where odds are acceptable) or anchor two runners for multiples etc. (Note: Over the long term the top-two Wrat runners have won around 43% to 46%, and the top rated runner 25% to 27%, of races on a seasonal basis)
