Jockey & Trainer combinations and profile (Clayton Gallagher)
Clayton Gallagher was born and bred in country New South Wales, and it is on the country and provincial circuit in particular that he continues to ride with success. He started his apprenticeship in 2015 with Rodney Robb in Nyngan and this early association played a significant role in shaping his career, as he continued to work with the Robb family when Rod's son Brett established his own stable, first in Nyngan and later at Dubbo.
Clayton rode over 200 winners as an apprentice, and that included 50 on the provincial circuit, and 20 in the city. He has now ridden well over 500 winners, with the 500th being for his long-term "mate", Brett Robb.
Injuries have plagued his career. But despite the consequent interruptions due to injury Clayton finished the 2022-23 racing season third in the Racing NSW Country Jockeys Premiership on 86 wins, with a strike rate of 18%. And despite a recent injury he is currently ranked 6th in the 2023-24 Country Premiership on 69 wins, with an even more impressive 23.1% win rate. Rodney Robb is quoted as saying: "I think he can still be better than he is, and if he really put his head down, I think he could be the best in the state."
