Trainer & Jockey combinations and profile (Matt Cumani)
Matthew (Matt) Cumani established his stable, Cumani Racing, at Ballarat and had his first runner in 2016. Matt is the son of Luca Cumani, a renowned Italian trainer who had an extremely successful career in England, with winners of the Epsom Derby (twice) and a Breeders' Cup, winning more than 50 Group 1 races overall.
Before training in his own right, Matt gained much from working with such trainers as Todd Pletcher, Paddy Gallagher, Chris Waller, Ed Dunlop and, of course, his father. When he started at Ballarat he had only 6 horses on his books. That number has grown considerably over the years.
Matt once described his training practice: I mix the training styles. My model is based more on the UK, in the way we build up the week to our gallops on a Wednesday, have an easy Thursday and build back up again to a gallop on a Saturday. Thats more the traditional English model rather than the Australian way, which might be to gallop Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.
Another quote: "I'm the son of a trainer so I've seen it all before; I've seen big jockeys get on horse and ride stinking races. To me, 90 per cent of everything is about the horse, if the horse is right, you're good. I don't think switching the jockey at the last minute is going to help much."
Matt is currently ranked in the top-20 Victorian Provincial/Country Premiership on 42 wins, with a strike rate of 12.6%.
