Jockey & Trainer combinations and profile (Lacey Morrison)
Lacey Morrison currently rides on the North Queensland circuit. She has a family connection with racing as her grandfather Alec Morrison was a trainer and her father, John, was an amateur jockey. She won her first race as an apprentice in April 2000 (at Bundaberg, on Superb Ring, trained by Tony Gollan) and quickly made a name for herself in and around Toowoomba and finished third in the Brisbane apprentice premiership, against riders of the calibre of Michael Rodd and Zac Purton during her early years.
Lacey outrode her metropolitan allowance before completing her apprenticeship as well as winning a Group 3 in 2003 on the Barry Bowditch trained Proudly Agro. More recently, in 2017, Lacey made history by becoming the first female jockey to ride the winner of the Ramornie Handicap.
There were gaps in her race-riding career between 2013 and 2021. During various absences from the riding ranks Lacey has been a trainer, a steward, and a tutor of apprentice jockeys. There is also the on-going desire to finish her training as a nurse.
In the 2023-24 season, Lacey rode 101 winners with a win percentage of 24.0%, and finished 4th in the Queensland Jockey Premiership.
