Chad Lever and his many supporters have reason to celebrate a career that has spanned three decades, during which he has achieved significant milestone victories and premierships across both South Australia and New South Wales. johntapp
Background and Family Connections
Born and raised in Port Augusta, South Australia, Chad was introduced to racing at an early age through his maternal grandfather, Fred Brodie, who was both a jockey and horse trainer. Chad started his own riding career in the mid1990s, having his first race in July 1996 and his first winner in September of that year. He outrode his claim within 18 months and became one of Adelaide's leading young riders. He won four Adelaide jockeys premierships - two as an apprentice and two as a senior rider. He is married to former jockey and now Hawkesbury trainer Claire Lever (ne Nutman), daughter of Hawkesbury trainer Richard Nutman. Claire retired from riding professionally in 2018, has since joined the training ranks, and now has a working stable of around 30 boxes at Hawkesbury. LinkedIn Claire Lever
Main Riding Locations
Chad initially focused on country and provincial tracks, first in South Australia and later New South Wales. Since relocating from S.A. he has established himself as a regular participant, and winner, on NSW country and provincial circuits. He has strong support among trainers outside the metropolitan area, and it has been his country and provincial success that has underpinned his reputation with those trainers. Chad took time away from race riding in 2022, but continued to ride trackwork and trials, and then returned full-time in NSW in late 2024. johntapp instagram]
Key Training Partnerships
As well as his close links with non-metro stables, a key association has been with the top-tier Bjorn Baker stable and Chad's success on some of this stable's runners is noteworthy. Another important aspect of Chad's later career has been the partnership with his wife, trainer Claire Lever, at their Hawkesbury base, riding work, educating young horses, and riding the stable's runners in races. In addition to the "Lever" stable, Chad has long been popular with a wide range of country and provincial trainers. In short, Chad's reputation has been built not on success with one dominant metropolitan stable, but on many enduring relationships. johntapp
Career Milestones
It is fair to say that Chad's career has been one of sustained success rather than Group race success, though he did enjoy Group 3 success on She's Discreet in the 1999 Dermody Stakes. Also noteworthy is one winning run that saw him ride ten winners in just eight days on country and provincial tracks. johntapp
